Glen Ellyn, IL post office on Main Street - artist Daniel Rhodes
I stared and studied this mural for a good twenty minutes while waiting to mail a package over the Christmas season at my local post office. I had a flashback at seeing a similar painting in New York when we lived there.
I've seen the one above for years and even looked it up online years ago, wondering if it was part of the WPA project in the 1930's I had learned about in an art class at college.
Indeed it was. Artist Daniel Rhodes was one of hundreds hired in the 1930's to beautify over a thousand post offices and boost the morale of citizens during the Depression.
Here is the list of all of them - in both large and small towns across the US. A very good chance one is near you.
Great American artworks, hiding in plain sight.
