a new word for my vocabulary

mudita
word from Sanskrit and Pali that has no counterpart in English.
It means sympathetic or unselfish joy, or joy in the good fortune of others.

Opposite of: schadenfreude

Recently a good friend had a project completed in her house that I know she has wished for a while. I couldn't be more happy for her. I am vicariously enjoying all of the stages of such a project: the planning, budgeting, nervous construction/installation days and then...the morning after, when you turn the corner and can't believe its exactly what you've dreamed of.

Happened again the other night en masse when a student manager of the University of Kansas Jayhawks basketball team was allowed to suit up and go into the final seconds of a home game.
Here is a little taste of what happened.

Chris Huey, a high school basketball player who suffered a collapsed lung after an accident, went to KU and joined the team behind-the-scenes to be close to the sport he once played.  And at a recent home game against TCU, with less than an minute on the clock and Kansas up by eleven, he was rewarded for all of his hard work for the team by Coach Self.

Mudita x thousands = pure shared joy.
