After watching a few episodes of the BBC America series "The Game" (featured in this earlier blog post), I realized the Brits have quite a few sayings that did not register with me at all. You'd think after all the Downton Abbey that I've consumed I would have caught on!
Then I came across this cute article, titled "Eleven idioms only Brits understand". Although it did not clear up all my questions, it was a reminder of how each culture/language has their own shorthand or slang.
I'm sure our U.S. idioms stump quite a few trying to learn our language (stopping a bad habit cold turkey, or bending over backwards to help someone out). But I think it is great that in our global community, we still have some ways to speaking to each other with a little wink, saying "I'm one of you."
