Mention a pending trip to Paris or Rome and one of the very first things you will hear is, "Of course, you know about the pick pocketers!".
We experienced it first-hand a few years ago in Paris, where a young woman carrying a clipboard pretended to ask survey questions while others swarmed us, asking for a Euro. When I firmly yelled NO!, she hit the top of my water bottle then tugged my hair. I felt like Carrie Bradshaw when she stepped in the dog poop. And so I did as she did: made things better with a croissant.
And Sweet Home Chicago is not immune. My story from the L train after a Cubs game is a dime a dozen, I'm sure.
I realize there are layers of reasons such "petty theft" exists in cities, but I must say I applaud the staff of the Eiffel Tower who recently refused to work to protest the rampant pick pocketers in and around the famous landmark. Read more about it in The Telegraph.
A similar stance was taken by workers a few years ago at The Louvre, just after we had visited.
Three cheers for the staff of these world famous tourists destinations. If you ever have the occasion, they should be personally thanked; for looking out for those of us visiting their cities and for taking such pride in their post.
