background noise

Nothing luxe about this: a Walmart special does the trick

When it boils down to the necessities for a good night's sleep in my house, it comes to this: a fan.  Every bedroom (including the guest room and where the dog sleeps) is outfitted with a simple oscillating fan.

What was first used when we lived in the city out of necessity, we have now found this perfect drown out level of white noise keeps both outside traffic and inside goings-on at bay.

Of course, now we find we need it wherever we sleep.  A fan app on the iPad /iPhone for use on vacations works quite nicely for us.

On a similar note, I tripped across this website:

Described as "the hum of a coffee shop to boost creativity while you work", I decided to give it a try.  It's actually pretty benign in terms of noise, but I think it forces you to hunker down while you work because you are forced to focus and concentrate to block out those ambient sounds.

And the sounds of people chatting and moving about has a totally different vibe than listening to produced music or talk radio.

Would love to hear what others do create white noise.  Or if you feel you need to at all?!
