I stand corrected.
What a fantastic, face-saving phrase.
I used it not long ago myself when I invited two friends over for their opinion about back porch furniture placement.
You know, an important, life-altering decision (ha ha)
But instead of considering their ideas, I proceeded to argue against every suggestion they made. I guess I wanted their opinion, as long as it agreed with mine! I was so embarrassed afterwards that I text-ed an apology to both within an hour of their visit. And made sure to send a photo a few weeks later of the finished project, their helpful suggestions in full display.
The "I stand corrected" apology allows both parties to quickly let something go, which is a gracious gift to the one who stands corrected. Maybe less satisfying for the one who was trying to make the point in the first place.
But I am grateful, in my case, it was all I had to say to my friends that day.
I hope to remember that feeling when I am next offered an apology.
